Three Weeks Vegan: Breaking Habits and Weighing in

Today marks my 21st day as a vegan. They say it takes 21 days to break a habit, and if there’s any truth in that number, I can say it does seem easier now, especially now that I’ve changed out a few staples of my diet and have some go-to vegan options I can consistently enjoy.

I’ve been thinking a bit about habits and how they define us, and how we consistently fall back into them, like a rut that’s been worn into an old dirt road through many years.  It can be hard to get out.  I’ve found myself sliding back into that path again and again.

I created this site to force myself out of that rut life can grind us into by each year sparking a new adventure, a little jolt to knock me out of that rut.  This year it’s being vegan and getting healthy.  And 21 days in, I’m pretty comfortable being defined as a vegan.

The road I’ve been walking on the past three weeks is beginning to indent a little and soon, hopefully, grow deeper as it replaces the old long-worn rut of donuts, soda, and late night fast-food binges. I got my first “Are you losing weight?” today.  Many more are yet to come this year.

Normally I weigh myself the first of each month, but it seemed apt to check my progress now that my veganism has officially become “habit.”

Starting Weight (November 20th): 371.2 lbs

Last Weigh in (December 1st): 354.4 lbs

Current Weight: 347.0

Not bad, considering I’ve stuffed my face with a different vegan pizza nearly every single night in my attempt at finishing the Complete Guide to Vegan Pizza (coming Monday).

  3. Congratulations on your journey to better health! I started my lifestyle change in May of this year. I have managed to stay vegan (with a few minor slips at the beginning) since then & I have lost 67 pounds so far & have come off of all diabetic & thyroid medication. I am looking forward to following your blog & getting ideas for new recipes to try!

  5. I switched to a vegan diet in July. While I was reading up on how to actually *do* that, one sage author advised not to worry too much about weight loss until getting comfortable with the diet. This kept me from crying too much at first, since I was eating vegan, just three times more than “portion size” indicated. I think my panic has simmered down, and I’ve started losing. Phew!

    But, honestly, switching to vegan is probably the easiest life-change I’ve ever made. Now if I can just eat *moderately* I’ll be jogging beside you soon.
