Change for a Year

Take a year. Change your life.

A New Year, a New Weigh-in, and a Really Dumb Vow

I’ve never made a vow before.

I’ve made goals.  I’ve made resolutions, but a vow, now that’s some serious business.  A goal can be changed.  A resolution can be easily dismissed and forgotten.  A vow is sacred.

When I started this journey, I need all the motivation I could get.  It was my opinion that a vow would be useful.  It is a known fact that beards are both epic and awesome.

“He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than a man.”
-William Shakespeare

“Some men had faces that cried out for a beard.  [His] face cried out for an axe between the eyes.”
-George R. R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons

Whenever people asked about my beard, I told them I was not going to shave until I was below 300 pounds.  Now this was at 370 pounds.  For you mathematically challenged out there: 370-300 = a really, really long time.  It’s only been about 2 months, and it’s already getting out of control.

Cool fact about beards:  If you grow your beard out then shave, people think you’ve lost weight.  I’ve done this experiment several times (including when I’ve gained weight), and I got the same response each time.

Starting Weight (November 20th): 371.2 lbs

Last Weigh in (December 1st): 354.4 lbs

Current Weight: 339 lbs

Down 15.4 pounds in the month of December.  Can’t wait to try some new vegan recipes this year!

  1. People aren’t even going to recognize you when you shave! lol congrats on all your losses so far

  2. That’s awesome! I guess this vegan thing is really working out. My husband and his best friend have a beard-off every year. Neither shaves from Christmas to St. Patricks Day and then it is judged who has grown the beardiest beard.

  3. For your next vow, perhaps you could buy a black suit and a straw hat, move to Lancaster County, and be a character in Beverly Lewis’ next novel.

    • Had to Google Beverly Lewis. She’s written a lot of books. I hope to write just one some day. 🙂

      • Well, may you become the Beverly Lewis of whatever-genre-you-are-led-to-write. Just do me a favor. Make it life-affirming. From what I’ve read of your work so far, you’re on the right track.

  4. I love the vow idea! And you gotta love “Game of Thrones”! Happy Hairiness!

  5. Wow! What an accomplishment! You should really consider cutting back on wheat. I just read Wheat Belly and learned a lot! You might be able to shave that thing even sooner!!! If you haven’t checked that book out, it’s a real eye opener!
