“Non Douche Vegan” and Other Searches People Use to Find My Blog

Now that I’ve been blogging a few months, I’m getting a few people trickling in my site via the major search engines. Mainly the searches involve vegan pizza and brownies, Dr. Seuss, quitting your job, and various vegan news items, but a few of them are quite humbling.

Ode to my Beard: The Scarlet Beast

Lets be frank here. Beards are awesome. That is a fact. It is not disputed by anyone with any credibility on anything.

I’d always wanted a beard. The hard part was commitment. In my early days it would grow patchy and haphazard, and, as someone who actually cared what people thought of me, I didn’t want to look like a testosterone-deprived, cant-grow-a-full-beard pussy. So I shaved. I shaved daily, and I was content to live a life without awesomeness.

What will you be when you grow up?

“You can be anything you want to be,” my parents would say. I wanted to be a doctor and a cowboy and an archaeologist and an astronaut and a wizard. It changed depending on the day of the week. That is amazing they said. Dream big and don’t let anyone hold you back.

My sixth grade teacher ran a contest to encourage us to read. She had a stack of books called The Hardy Boys, and each day I’d sign out a book and read the whole thing that night.

6 Easy Vegan Dinners in 15 Minutes

What do vegans eat every day?

I’m vegan and I’m fat. That means I love to eat, and I’m trying to eat healthy. These past weeks I’ve been balancing the last month at my old job, freelance writing, blogging, moving into a new place and cleaning my old apartment. I haven’t had a lot of time to prepare meals. And when I have, half of my kitchen stuff is either packed up in boxes or already moved.

Ghosts in the Passenger Seat

Springsteen once said people can change, but they can’t rid themselves of who they were. Traveling along life’s highway, old versions of ourselves are always with us, like apparitions haunting from the grave. Sometimes, he said, those old versions, those old ways of thinking and those old fears take the wheel. It’s impossible to shake your past.

That’s why change is so hard. People want to start over. They want to move away and become a different person. But that is impossible. As the old saying goes, “Wherever you go, there you are.” They chase you down and haunt you wherever you hide.

6:02 a.m. Why did you tell everyone you were going to start running?

6:08 a.m. C’mon, get your ass up!

Another Failure, More Challenges, and My First Quarter Weigh-In

Awhile back I wrote a post on embracing failure. I think I’ve gotten a little too friendly with it. Now me and failure are like every Beyonce song I’ve ever heard.

First I loathe the song. (No failure this year, healthy vegan all 2013!)

Then we start flirting a little. (Maybe a few Oreos aren’t so bad.)

Next thing I know that song has rented a room somewhere in the back of my brain, and it won’t leave, and I’m doing the damn dance from the video in my shower. (Mmm. Brownies. And chips. And did someone say vegan chili dogs? Yes please!)
